What is Cinco De Mayo?

If you didn’t already know, Cinco De Mayo is not Mexican independence day. Rather it’s a popular Mexican holiday – more widely celebrated by Americans. It commemorates the Battle of Puebla on May 5th 1862, when the Mexican military defeated a French army.

This occurred at Puebla, where the French were moving through to reach Mexico City with the goal of creating a satellite state. Despite the French returning the following year, the 1862 victory honoured a significant victory for the Mexican military.

Cinco De Mayo in US History

Cinco De Mayo became popular in the US during the civil rights movement, when Mexican Americans used the day as a source of pride. It became a chance for people to come together and celebrate the vibrant culture. Since the 1980s the holiday has gained more popularity across the country largely because of alcohol brand promotions.

How to Celebrate Cinco De Mayo At Home

So now that we understand the cause for celebration, we can get started on planning our Cinco De Mayo festivities at home. Whether you have a small space or large one, there are plenty of ways to make the most of your celebration in the comfort of your own home.

1. Stay on Theme

Cinco De Mayo is celebrated with festive dress, parades, food and of course decorations. Convert your space into a Cinco De Mayo dream by staying on theme in all aspects of your celebration. This means authentic food and drink (crowd favourites always include tacos, guacamole and tequila), but also custom decorations and banners to liven up your space and bring in some colour.

If you’re feeling creative, you can even create your own with our customizable banners at DoorPOP, to suit any colour and design scheme.

2. Support Your Local Mexican Restaurant

If the knack for authentic Mexican food doesn’t run in your blood don’t fret – meals and drinks can be made easy by supporting your local Mexican restaurant. Not only will you get the most genuine cuisine, you can sit back and enjoy the good times without worrying about the timer on the oven.

3. Convert Your Garage

Perhaps you don’t have a lot of indoor space, or you simply don’t want guests spilling salsa on the carpet. Either way, converting your garage into the ultimate fiesta could be a great idea. Decorations are key here to keep it looking fresh – cover up those concrete walls and rusty doors with colourful displays and custom banners to suit your celebration.

At DoorPOP, we offer custom garage door banners for any occasion, including Cinco De Mayo themed designs – shop our range online.

4. Support Mariachis

Wherever you decide to host your celebration, hiring a mariachi band is a great way to add some fun. A lot of mariachis have unfortunately lost income from their frequent events being cancelled as a result of the pandemic, so hiring your own is a supportive way to show up for you local. If this isn’t in your budget, feel free to purchase a mariachi CD, hook up those speakers and get dancing.

Customize Your Space

If you’re planning your next Cinco De Mayo celebration, or perhaps you just want to show some support for Mexican culture, changing up your space is an easy way to get into the spirit. At DoorPOP, we offer a range of high-quality Cinco De Mayo themed banners – customizable for your garage or other door space.
